As a fan of Bookshops of Arkham and Call of Cthulhu in general, I was stoked to see that Chaosium would be releasing another actual play show with Mark Meer, Lucia Versprille, and Patrick Logan. Turns out, I liked Graveyards of Arkham even more than the first!
From the minds of Belinda Cornish and Darren Ormandy (they wrote the predecessor series Bookshops of Arkham too!) we get Graveyards of Arkham, a 6-episode actual play set in the witch cursed and ghoul haunted city of Arkham, Massachusetts where our intrepid investigators are called upon to find a missing girl and discover what is behind some so-called charitable works.
Being a fan of Bookshops of Arkham, I was thrilled to see this AP come about. Mark Meer, Lucia Versprille, and Patrick Logan were fantastic in the first series so I knew I would have a good time watching them play and improv. I hadn’t seen any of Josephine McAdam’s or Noura Ibrahim’s work before but fell in love with their characters Vic and Big Betty instantly.
What I loved almost as much as the cast and story were the props! A detailed map, a full grimoire, a bone pickaxe, AND a corpse ready to eat! A treat for the eyes and inspiration for a Lore Keeper. I am truly impressed by the props department.
Graveyards of Arkham is just what fans of Call of Cthulhu love about the game. Arkham becomes a maze of lore and done in such an immersive way with the new CoC: Arkham book – 290 locations, 80 NPCs, and more to give characters a sandbox world to explore or to add to your own one shots and campaigns.
Highly recommend the Graveyards of Arkham AP for fans of Call of Cthulhu but also for people who haven’t played and want to watch an entertaining eldritch horror story that interestingly enough doesn’t star a squid monster but gets a little maternal instead…
