Huggable – my first time voice acting

Huggable – my first time voice acting

Last year I decided to take a stab at voice acting. I’d always thought it was something I couldn’t do because I have a relatively high pitched voice (many still think they’re talking to a child when I answer the phone and ask if my mother is available to talk) and a southern Appalachian accent. I was raised to believe neither of these things were desirable and went about my life certain the sound of my voice annoyed people. It wasn’t until the past few years that I began to believe otherwise thanks to the help of TTRPGs – running them and playing them gave me the space to test out voice work.

So when I saw a TikTok by Weird Movie Lady requesting voice actors for her indie horror movie, I decided to give it a shot. Interestingly, I got the part but not one that some might think of as a traditional voice acting role.

If you’d like to try and guess what my role was in the movie, stop reading here and watch the movie. Come back when you’re done – its short so it won’t take you long – and see if you guessed correctly. Go on, I’ll wait.

I am the voice actor for the giggles. That’s right, I’m the giggler.
For the part, I harnessed my love of evil clowns and the giggles I do when I’m trying to creep out my family…which is a totally normal thing for someone to do, I’m sure.

How I got the Job…

and you can too!

I sent in a handful of test giggles and then a few more on request using a Blue snowball mic I got on sale at a local electronics shop and the free Audacity software on my computer. If this is something you’d be interested in, all you really need is a decent mic and that app to edit your audition audios. Try out sites like Casting Call Club (where Weird Movie Lady posted her call for auditions). Some of the jobs on there are bunk to be honest, most don’t pay, and I won’t promise you’ll be the next Laura Bailey or Matt Mercer this way. However, it might help you build a portfolio if this is something you’re really interested in doing.

Huggable Review

Huggable is a fantastic indie horror movie. Britani Bishop did an amazing job for a low (no?) budget movie filmed in her home and edited herself. The music, voice acting, and lighting create eerie atmosphere and Bishop’s acting is relaxed and fun. I think its a great addition to anyone’s indie horror watch list this summer, especially fans of creepy toy movies like Child’s Play, Puppet Master, and Demonic Toys. Move over Dolly Dearest, Huggable has come to play.
